How to Care for Your Human Hair Extensions: A Simple Guide

Sep 22, 2026 MG Hair Team Hair Care

Good human hair extensions can last a long time, but only if you look after them. Unlike your own hair, extensions do not receive natural oils from your scalp, so they need a little extra care. These simple habits will keep your hair soft, shiny and tangle-free.

1. Detangle gently

  • Always start from the ends and slowly work your way up to the roots.
  • Use a wide-tooth comb or a soft extension brush. Avoid pulling hard on knots.
  • Detangle before washing, and again after the hair is damp and conditioned.

2. Wash with care

  • Wash only when needed. Washing too often can dry out the hair.
  • Use lukewarm water and a mild, sulphate-free shampoo.
  • Smooth the shampoo down the hair in one direction. Do not rub or twist the hair into a knot.
  • Apply conditioner from mid-length to the ends and rinse well.

3. Moisturise

Extensions can dry out because they do not get natural oil. After washing, use a leave-in conditioner or a few drops of a light hair oil on the mid-lengths and ends. Keep products away from the lace or the weft where possible.

4. Dry the right way

  • Pat the hair with a soft towel. Do not wring it out.
  • Let it air dry whenever you can.
  • If you use a blow dryer, keep it on a low or medium setting.

5. Protect the hair from heat

Human hair can be styled with heat, but too much heat will damage it. Always use a heat protectant, keep your tools at a moderate temperature, and give the hair a break between styling sessions.

6. Sleep and store it safely

  • Do not go to bed with wet hair.
  • Tie the hair loosely in a braid or a low ponytail, or use a satin or silk bonnet or pillowcase.
  • When you are not wearing the hair, keep it clean, dry and loosely tied in a bag or box.

7. Be careful with chemicals

Perfume, alcohol-based sprays, chlorine and salt water can all dry out the hair. If you want to colour the hair, talk to a professional stylist. Virgin and raw hair can usually be coloured, but hair that is already coloured or lightened needs extra care.

A quick care routine

  1. Detangle from the ends.
  2. Wash with mild shampoo in lukewarm water.
  3. Condition the mid-lengths and ends.
  4. Air dry and apply a leave-in product.
  5. Store or sleep with the hair tied loosely.
